Payments Canada says its Real-Time Rail, a new system for instant, always-on, data-rich payments, launches in the fourth quarter of 2026. On October 8, BetaKit reported that none of Canada's Big Six banks is currently expected to take part in the first phase, citing four sources in the fintech industry.
What was reported
According to BetaKit, both the sender's and the receiver's institutions must be onboarded for a payment to move over the new rail. Otherwise it travels over the existing systems. The federal government says it aims to have all major financial institutions on board by next summer. Fintechs such as Float, Wealthsimple and Koho became Payments Canada members this year, and the industry group Fintechs Canada has called for a public adoption scorecard to track how much volume actually moves onto the rail.
Payments Canada's own page describes a phased rollout that adds participants over time, and reports that industry testing with participants has begun.
What it means for a restaurant
- Nothing changes at the table. Guests will keep paying by card and Interac debit, and those keep running on the networks and fees covered in our post on this fall's card fee changes.
- Watch the back office. Instant transfers are most likely to show up first in paying suppliers and staff, and in how fast money moves between accounts, once your own bank or provider joins.
- Ask before you're sold. If a provider pitches real-time payments to you this winter, ask which institutions are actually live on the rail, because in the first phase it may be very few.
We'll update this post when Payments Canada confirms the launch and the first participants.
